During his career with the Times, Curry authored more than 4,500 articles, covered 18 World Series, 11 All-Star Games and two World Baseball Classics. The New Jersey native also was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in 1999, and won multiple Times Publisher Awards.

Curry's television experience extends back to 1991, when he began contributing to Madison Square Garden Network's Yankees pre-game show and weekly baseball magazine show. Since November 2005, Curry has been a regular contributor to YES' Yankees Hot Stove show, and for the last five seasons, he has appeared on YES' Yankees Access shows. In addition, he was a featured panelist on MSG's Angles roundtable show, was a frequent guest on WCBS-TV's Baseball Insider weekly studio show, and has also provided expert baseball analysis and commentary on television and radio programs such as ESPN's Outside the Lines, MSNBC's Countdown with Keith Olbermann, ESPN Radio's The Michael Kay Show and various WFAN Radio programs.

Curry also co-wrote a book with Derek Jeter entitled The Life You Imagine: Life Lessons for Achieving Your Dreams, which was a New York Times best-seller. In January 2013, Curry received the Broadcast Achievement Award from the New Jersey Sports Writers Association and was named "Top Sports Analyst" by the New Jersey-based 201 Magazine. A 1986 graduate of Fordham University, Curry resides with his wife, Pamela, in New Jersey.

Former Yankees catcher John Flaherty enters his 12th season as a field reporter, studio analyst and game analyst for YES Network telecasts. He received New York Emmy Award nominations in 2010, 2011 and 2013 for his work at YES.

Drafted by Boston in 1988, Flaherty progressed through the Red Sox farm system before joining their Major League squad in 1992. He played 14 seasons in the Majors with Boston (1992-93), Detroit (1994-96), San Diego (1996-97), Tampa Bay (1998-2002) and the Yankees (2003-05), compiling a .252 average with 80HR in 1,047 games.

Flaherty brought his knowledge of the game and his veteran style of leadership to the Yankees clubhouse when he signed as a free agent in 2003. He played in 134 games with the Yankees across three seasons, and will be long remembered for his dramatic pinch-hit, "walk-off" single to defeat the Boston Red Sox in the 13th inning on June 1, 2004 - the contest that featured Derek Jeter's famous dive into the third base stands.

Flaherty is a New York City native and a graduate of George Washington University. On May 15, 2009, he was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from St. Thomas Aquinas College in Sparkill, N.Y. In 2015, he was inducted into the New York State Baseball Hall of Fame.

Michael Kay

Now in his 16th season as the play-by-play announcer for the YES Network, Kay also serves as the host of YES' CenterStage series, hosts his own radio talk show on ESPN Radio in New York and is a frequent contributor to ESPN's Emmy Award-winning Sports Reporters. In 2008, 2011 and 2016, he handled play-by-play duties for the ESPN Radio Network's coverage of the AL Division Series.

There are many other interpolators which take more surrounding pixels into consideration, and are thus also much more computationally intensive. These algorithms include spline and sinc, and retain the most image information after an interpolation. They are therefore extremely useful when the image requires multiple rotations / distortions in separate steps. However, for single-step enlargements or rotations, these higher-order algorithms provide diminishing visual improvement as processing time is increased.

All non-adaptive interpolators attempt to find an optimal balance between three undesirable artifacts: edge halos, blurring and aliasing.

Enlarged 400%
Edge Halo

Even the most advanced non-adaptive interpolators always have to increase or decrease one of the above artifacts at the expense of the other two — therefore at least one will be visible. Also note how the edge halo is similar to the artifact produced by over sharpening with an unsharp mask , and improves the Love Fire Womens Tie Front Stripe Shirtdress Blue White Stripe wKlDk

Adaptive interpolators may or may not produce the above artifacts, however they can also induce non-image textures or strange pixels at small-scales:

Enlarged 220%
Adaptive Interpolation

On the other hand, some of these "artifacts" from adaptive interpolators may also be seen as benefits. Since the eye expects to see detail down to the smallest scales in fine-textured areas such as foliage, these patterns have been argued to trick the eye from a distance (for some subject matter).

Anti-aliasing is a process which attempts to minimize the appearance of aliased or jagged diagonal edges, termed "jaggies." These give text or images a rough digital appearance:

Enlarged 300%(With Aliasing)
Enlarged 300%(Without Aliasing)

Anti-aliasing removes these jaggies and gives the appearance of smoother edges and higher resolution. It works by taking into account how much an ideal edge overlaps adjacent pixels. The aliased edge simply rounds up or down with no intermediate value, whereas the anti-aliased edge gives a value proportional to how much of the edge was within each pixel:

Perfect Diagonal
Resampled to Low Resolution

A major obstacle when enlarging an image is preventing the interpolator from inducing or exacerbating aliasing. Many adaptive interpolators detect the presence of edges and adjust to minimize aliasing while still retaining edge sharpness . Since an anti-aliased edge contains information about that edge's location at higher resolutions, it is also conceivable that a powerful adaptive (edge-detecting) interpolator could at least partially reconstruct this edge when enlarging.

Crowdsourced data collection is when researchers turn to internet communities to answer research, survey or feedback questions. Crowdsourced data collection is gaining popularity because it is convenient, inexpensive and relatively quick. Learning how this strategy compares with more comprehensive and traditional approaches is important to guiding future research.

That’s whyresearchers compared crowdsourced data from the Amazon Mechanical Turk, an internet marketplace where researchers can post questions to collect data, with the National Adult Tobacco Survey, a comprehensive survey from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Specifically, researchers crowdsourced demographic, tobacco perception and tobacco warning label exposure data from nearly 4,000 young adults ages 18-30, and compared their data with NATS data after using a statistical technique to make the samples comparable in gender, race/ethnicity, educational attainment and age.

, reveal some important insights into the research method.

The two surveys yielded different results in several areas, including tobacco use, demographics, perceptions of harm and warning label exposure. Crowdsourced data had significantly more non-cigarette tobacco users, particularly e-cigarette users (13.9 percent compared with 2.6 percent). Crowdsourced participants were also less likely to report that smoking is very harmful (81.8 percent vs. 88.8 percent), but were equally likely to report that smoking is very addictive.

When it comes to exposure to warning labels, fewer (16.9 percent) crowdsourced participants indicated that they faced exposure to cigarette warning labels “very often,” and were less likely than NATS smokers to report that smoking is “very harmful” across almost all levels of warning label exposure. Consistent with past studies, researchers found the crowdsourced data over-sampled lower income populations.

These results demonstrate that crowdsourced data are not generalizable to the population at large, and should not be used for the “monitoring of population trends in behaviors and other outcomes,” according to the authors.

Although crowdsourced data can’t be used to represent the general population, several types of research would benefit from this form of data collection. Some examples include: research looking for high tobacco-use populations, or earlier phases of studies, including “idea development, designing public health interventions, and ascertaining feedback on alternative approaches,” write the authors.

The framing of crowdsourced surveys is also important for yielding good results. For example, the survey was framed as a tobacco survey, which may have attracted more tobacco-using participants. The authors recommend “framing descriptions for crowdsourced data collection more generally (e.g., a survey on health) to reduce the likelihood that those familiar with the survey subject will be more likely to respond.”
